Photospheric signatures imprinted on the γ-ray burst spectra

چکیده

A solution is presented for the spectrum of high-energy GRB photons confined to a quasithermal baryonic photosphere. The solution is valid in the steady-state limit assuming the region under consideration is optically thick to the continuously injected photons. It is shown that for a high luminosity photosphere, the non-thermal electrons resulting from γ-ray Compton cooling lose their energy by upscattering the soft thermalised radiation. The resulting spectral modifications offer the possibility of diagnosing not only the burst comoving luminosity but also the baryon load of the ejecta. This model leads to a simple physical interpretation of X-ray rich bursts and anomalous low-energy slopes.

X–Ray Observations of γ–Ray Burst Afterglows

The discovery by the BeppoSAX satellite of X-ray afterglow emission from the γ-ray burst which occurred on 28 February 1997 produced a revolution in our knowledge of the γ-ray burst phenomenon. Along with the discovery of X-ray afterglows, the optical afterglows of γ-ray bursts were discovered and the distance issue was settled, at least for long γ-ray bursts. The 30 year mystery of the γ-ray b...

The GLAST Burst Monitor (GBM)

The selection of the GLAST burst monitor (GBM) by NASA will allow the investigation of the relation between the keV and the MeV-GeV emission from γ-ray bursts. The GBM consists of 12 NaI and 2 BGO crystals allowing a continuous measurement of the energy spectra of γ-ray bursts from ∼ 5 keV to ∼ 30 MeV. One feature of the GBM is its high time resolution for time-resolved γ-ray spectroscopy. More...

Observations of the intense and ultra-long burst GRB 041219a with the Germanium Spectrometer on INTEGRAL

Context. GRB 041219a is the brightest burst localised by INTEGRAL. The peak flux of 43 ph cm−2 s−1 (1.84 ×10−5 ergs cm−2 s−1, 20 keV– 8 MeV, 1 s integration) is greater than that for ∼98% of all bursts and the T90 duration of ∼186 s (∼20 keV–8 MeV) is longer than all but a small number of bursts. The intense burst occurred about ∼250 s after the precursor and the long delay enabled optical and ...

Sax J1810.8-2609: a New Hard X-ray Bursting Transient

The transient X-ray source SAX J1810.8-2609 was discovered on 1998, March 10 with the Wide Field Cameras on board the BeppoSAX satellite, while observing the Galactic Bulge in the 2-28 keV energy range. On March 11, a strong type-I X-ray burst was detected with evidence of photospheric radius expansion. A follow-up target of opportunity observation with the Narrow-Field Instruments (NFI) was pe...

Very High Efficiency Photospheric Emission in Long Duration Γ-ray Bursts

We numerically analyze the evolution of a long-duration gamma-ray burst jet as it leaves the progenitor star and propagates to the photospheric radius, where radiation can be released. We find that the interaction of the relativistic material with the progenitor star has influences well beyond the stellar surface. Tangential collimation shocks are observed throughout the jet evolution, out to a...
